Two months later, on March 22, 2010, Google announced that is would (kind of) leave China. Google is now redirecting its Chinese users to their Hong Kong base instead of the mainland China base. The Hong Kong base is not subject to the same censorship laws as mainland China. (Hong Kong is a region of China, but it is an island and does not have the same laws that the mainland does.)
The Chinese government is extremely unhappy with Google's decision to leave mainland China. In fact, hours after Google's pullout in mainland China, the Chinese government started censoring search results routed through the Google Hong Kong site! ...... How long this will last or how complete the censorship will be is still an open question.
