Totalitarian government Totalitarianism is a form of government in which all resources are controlled by the government. The government recognizes no limits to its authority and attempts to regulate every aspect of public and private life. The government enforces its laws and rules through the use of propaganda, terror, and technology. People have very little freedom. The government attempts to control people's attitudes, values and beliefs. Totalitarian governments are dominated by one political party and usually by a single leader. (For example, there would be no Democratic party and Republican party – there would be only one. There would be no choice for people.) A secret police ensures that people conform to the government's wishes. Information and ideas are effectively organized through the control of television, radio, the press, and education at all levels. People who criticize the government tend to "disappear" in a totalitarian regime, and their family members may fall under close scrutiny. Many people feel that totalitarian regimes are a very poor form of government, because they can be quite oppressive. However, they are also highly efficient, thanks to the extreme level of control.
